Wrist ligament injury

The wrist is a complex structure with many ligaments that support and stabilise the bones. The most common site of injury is the triangular fibrocartilage, the scapholunate ligament or both.

While the location of pain and symptoms vary according to which structures are affected, ligament injuries are nearly always associated with discomfort on certain movements, decreased grip strength and impaired function.

These injuries may be the result of an injury (acute) or develop gradually over time (chronic). Diagnosis is made using imaging (usually MRI scan), clinical examination and diagnostic arthroscopy.

Depending on the location and severity of the injury, therapy and exercise programs can produce a good functional result.  In other cases, surgery is required to repair the ligament.

Your doctor will be able to guide you as to which treatment is most suitable for your specific injury.
